All Saints, Headington

If patience is a virtue then I must be one of most virtuous people in the country! It is quite normal for the consultation period for a church heating system to take in excess of three years and All Saints are no exception with my first visit being at the beginning of 2011 and the installation being carried out in the Summer of 2014.

All Saints Church is an Edwardian Church of England church in the Oxford Diocese. The church was built in 1910 and extended by the addition of a chancel in 1937. It was designed by Arthur Blomfield and Son and is described by Pevsner as having “an exceptionally impressive interior of exposed brick”. It is a large church which originally seated 400 people but this was increased to 600 with the addition of the chancel.

When I first visited All Saints Church it was being heated by high level, electric bar heaters which were completely ineffective for delivering the comfort levels expected in churches today. The brief was to provide good comfort levels with a system that would protect the building fabric as well as give flexible operation and economic running costs.

Our solution has been to provide a low pressure hot water system, with a wall- mounted, gas-fired condensing boiler sited in the boiler house and serving a total of fourteen high output, triple panelled radiators. The radiators have been painted to a special order terracotta red to blend in with the internal brickwork of the church.

The system is controlled by our unique Churchwarden control system which optimises start up and allows a low background temperature to be maintained as recommended by the Church Buildings Council.
